Installing Me

 Wow... 4 blogs later and I am still here writing posts for Johnie's classes. Once again, I will introduce myself. Hi... my name is Chapin Grumhaus and I am a senior studio art, art history double major who is a Chicago suburb girl that claims she is from Chicago. My art medium is primarily new media and photography, but when I am feeling artistic (even when I am really not) I like to pick up a paint brush. You have probably seen me around campus wearing my big Lawrence softball jacket and walking my dog because in all honesty softball and my dog (mainly my dog) are the only things that make up my personality. In fact my entire senior gallery show is about dogs and mental health, but mainly dogs which is also I guess the reason I chose to take this class. See my idea for this show is genuinely just a super large installation and truly, I have zero idea how I am actually going to pull it off. Basically on top of me loving installation art because of how interactive it is, I am taking this class with the hopes of figuring out my senior requirement of a gallery show. So ya that is me in a short paragraph, but feel free to enjoy these super cute photos of my dog... I wasn't joking when I said she is my whole personality and I will not apologize for that.

Andrew Norris

Because of softball, I did not have the opportunity to attend Andrew Norris' talk. Though true, I did get to chat with him in my practicum class and visit his website to look and reflect on his art. His art is super intriguing and after meeting and talking to him, I can see his influence and connection to his work. He is one of the youngest "successful" artists that I have gotten the pleasure to speak with about my work and his own. While looking at the thematic iconography within his different series, like Queer Appalachia and Toxic Masculinity you can see his expression of identity through out. His art approaches and, I personally believe conquers personal and universal problems and conversations. His art addresses the inclusion of the non-binary, gay sexuality, and addressing/confronting the patriarchy in a way I haven't seen done before. Final Installation: A Preview to My Senior Gallery Show

My final installation planned changed a little in the process of trying to create it. Originally my plan was to do a full run through of my senior show, but I made the decision when ordering the photos that I wanted to wait and have my final show be "original" and be the final and only run through. So with that in mind I chose to do a mini installation. I ordered only 100 photos to see an estimate of dimensions of how much space 1/10th of my images would cover. I chose to do a free collage on my kitchen table, collaging, but not sticking the images so they could be reused in my final show (photos are expensive). The entire set up actually only took me about 30 minutes, which was impressive in my eyes as I was expecting it to take WAY longer. The installation allowed for people to circulate the table, dodging my three rescue dogs who were enjoying playing tug of war underneath the table... it really allowed for an immersive experience.
